Parenting a Disorganized Child — Expert Tips
The big idea: Kids with weaknesses in planning and organization face all kinds of challenges–at school, in sports, in the family, and among social peers. The good news? There are tried-and true behavioral interventions parents can try–and continue to practice–with their child to help him or her learn new coping skills.
Clinical psychologists and learning specialists Joyce Cooper-Kahn PhD and Laurie Dietzel PhD offer six tips for parenting a disorganized child. Their tips can help parents whose child:
· Neglects to turn in completed assignments.
· Arrives at an event completely unprepared.
· Underestimates the effort involved in a project.
· Is overwhelmed at juggling multiple classes and projects.
· Has trouble identifying the most important information.
· Has trouble organizing space.
Joyce Cooper-Kahn PhD and Laurie Dietzel PhD are highly esteemed clinical psychologists who specialize in learning and emotional challenges affecting children and their families. They are coauthors of Late, Lost, and Unprepared: A Parents’ Guide to Helping Children with Executive Functioning (Woodbine House, $19.95). I agree , but it gets tricky at times.. With one going into third grade next year it is a challenge to keep up with what is happening next and what you have to remember to send to school the next day and what work has to get done. Being organized definately does help. Thanks for stopping by my place earlier
